Vector Portrait: Image Construct

Image
I used the famous painting "Girl with the Pearl Earring" because of the black background and the color palette choice for the subject had multiple different colors in it. I wanted the piece to look mosaic so I would only used 3 variations of a color to discern shadows from light, dark, light, and bright.

Op Art Redux

Image
I used two stars and one circle for this project. I blended both of them together and multiplied the amount of them using copy and paste and then blended those separate shapes together. I used the revolve object option in 3D and then transformed the object by using reflect on the horizontal which created an inner tube-like shape with various size rings and then I used free distort under effects and stretched the object to create a cone or funnel shape in the middle of the shape. I used a light blue for the overall color and used black for the triangles and the outline. I used the wallpaper wireframe texture for the object.

NEW MEXICO POSTCARD COMPOSITE

Image
POSTCARD TO NOWHERE PROJECT BY GAVIN MANNINO STEPS 1.The foreground is from a separate image then the mountain range in the background. I used the selection tool and magic wand to add the ground and the cacti and bushes to sell the blend where the two composited photos meet near the lower 1/3 of the image. Not having a straight line helps blend the two into one. For the mountain range, I used the "Lighten" option in the blending mode drop down menu and used the "Divide" option for the foreground of the desert. I really loved the transparent look of the foreground and the "retro" aesthetic that the "Divide" option gave the postcard. 2. Next I added a UFO into the sky layer as a tribute to the famous 1947 Roswell New Mexico "UFO" crash. I used the "Pin Light" option for the blending mode to have the UFO "camouflage" into the background of ...

A Portrait

A Portrait By: Gavin Mannino 04/29/2022     10:03:00 PM EST                                             Kyle MacLachlan (2014) Antonin Kratochvil    Photo Link: ( Photographer Antonin Kratochvil (etoday.ru) )     A portrait typically has its subject centered and posing in a specific way, usually looking towards the camera as the photo is being taken. The portrait taken by Antonin Kratochvil of Kyle Maclachlan, however, is not what the typical portrait looks like. The portrait is unfocused and has Maclachlan framed in medium close-up composure. How can this even be compared to a regular, run-of-the-mill portrait? Is this even a portrait?     I would say so, regardless of how abnormal the portrait is with breaking the standards and rules of a portrait. I feel this portrait captures the viewer's atten...

Beauty in Horror

Beauty in Horror By Gavin Mannino April 4th, 2022     9:00:00 P.M. EST             Sebastiao Salgado, Spectre of Hope (1994)   Photo Source Credit: ( London Photography Diary Sebastiao Salgado by Nerris Markogiannis | London                                    Photography Diary (london-photography-diary.com)      The  Spectre of Hope  in the Sebastiao Salgado's Migrations photographic series caught my eye almost instantly when I was looking through Sebastiao Salgado's work. The way the dust is illuminated into light rays is beautiful from a visual standpoint, but in context of what is happening in the photo, it is saddening. The phrase that pops into my head is, "There is beauty in horror." Sebastiao documented the mass migrations of different people groups over a seven-year time span, takin...

Manual Manipulation by Gavin Mannino

Manual Manipulation By Gavin Mannino 3/23/2022   10:23:00 P.M. EST                     Duane Michals, The Illuminated Man  (1968)    Photo Credit ( Duane Michals | Duane michals, Duane, New media art (pinterest.com) )                The common similarity between all the photographs are the surreal, bizarre elements that are present. I feel that those elements make a more interesting spectacle when compared to ordinary portraits. The   Illuminated Man  is a perfect pick for the elements I find intriguing. What could have been a standard, run-of-the-mill portrait has been altered to be more artistic in presentation. I imagine that a very bright light was aimed at the subject's face in order to cause the over-exposed, bright effect which seems pretty simple but makes for a hell of a picture. The composition is perfect, center...

Mystery Makes Marvels

Image
Mystery Makes Marvels By: Gavin Mannino February 27th, 2022     7:10 PM EST Hand through door, 1969  Ralph Gibson      Part of what makes art great is mystery. The not-knowing of something makes that something interesting. From detective noirs to who was the girl that smiled at you, the quest for an answer is captivating. I remember when I started watching Twin Peaks, I was not very sure of what was going on but I knew I wanted to figure it out. The thrill of trying to understand something that is complex or hard to understand is exhilarating and fun. Symbolism embodies the culture of art, and as a viewer, we are responsible with figuring out what the symbolism in a specific artwork means to us. But as I learned from Twin Peaks, sometimes there is not an answer or a big secret. Sometimes, mysteries are just meant to be enjoyed.      I felt this message when viewing this image taken by Ralph Gibson. There is a feeling of an un...

Making the Most of What You've Got by Gavin Mannino

Making the Most of What You've Got By: Gavin Mannino 02/21/2022     11:28:00 PM EST     New York City  (1966)     FRIEDLANDER, LEE     After we left the Lycoming Art Gallery today, I decided to go out and take pictures of anything I could compose to be symmetrical or capture through a reflection of a store front window. As I was taking pictures, I noticed how people walking by would either stare or mind their own business. It was a little weird at first, but I got used to it because the foot traffic was not that heavy for a Monday morning in downtown Williamsport. I went along taking pictures of alleyways, tall buildings, stores, and sidewalks. I still felt a little out of place, crouching and leaning while taking pictures on the sidewalk, it felt awkward. Then I started doing my research on Lee Friedlander and I realized I had no room to talk.                His photos he took in New York w...
